The runeblade Ner'zhul left on Northrend as a trap, and Arthas Menethil took it willingly.
It was inscribed "Whomsoever takes up this blade shall wield power eternal. Just as the blade rends flesh, so must power scar the spirit." Arthas read it. He took the sword anyway.
It consumed his soul and it devours the souls of everyone it kills — including Uther the Lightbringer and King Terenas.
