The Well
A lake of pure, raw magic at the heart of ancient Kalimdor — created when the Titans drained the world's chaotic energies into a single reservoir. Everything arcane on Azeroth traces back to it.
The Kaldorei built their civilization on its shores and grew powerful, beautiful, and immortal. Queen Azshara and her Highborne grew addicted to it, and their reckless spellwork drew the attention of Sargeras — leading directly to The War of the Ancients and The Sundering, which tore the continent apart and left the Well's site as the Maelstrom.
The Second Well
Illidan Stormrage, unwilling to live in a world without magic, poured stolen vials of the Well's water into a lake atop Mount Hyjal, creating a second Well. His brother Malfurion Stormrage imprisoned him for ten thousand years for it. The Dragon Aspects grew Nordrassil, the World Tree, over it — binding the night elves' immortality to it.
The Sunwell
High elf exiles, banished for practicing arcane magic, founded Quel'Thalas and created the Sunwell from a stolen vial. It sustained them for millennia.
Arcane Magic in the World
- Kirin Tor — the mage-rulers of Dalaran, now homeless
- Malygos, Aspect of Magic, has been insane since the Sundering — nobody is minding the store
- Arcane magic is an addiction. Every elven civilization that touched it has fallen.
- It is also a beacon. Heavy arcane use attracts the Burning Legion. This is precisely how the Legion found Azeroth the first time.
