Before the Titans, the elements ran wild across Azeroth under the Old Gods. The Titans defeated them and banished them to their own realms. They have been trying to return ever since.

Ragnaros and the Dark Iron
The Dark Iron Dwarves summoned Ragnaros during the War of the Three Hammers. He came, obliterated their city, and made them his slaves — a bargain they still consider to have gone well. He is bound in Molten Core beneath Blackrock Mountain, and Emperor Dagran Thaurissan rules in his shadow.
