In the World

Communion with the elements, and the most quietly remarkable story in the young Horde.

The orcs lost shamanism entirely when they drank Mannoroth's blood — a whole tradition gone inside a single generation, the elements refusing to answer a people who had sold themselves. Thrall rebuilt it almost from nothing after Durnholde, and the tauren taught him, because their line never broke. Four years on, orcish shamanism is a revival, not an inheritance, and everyone practising it knows exactly how close it came to being lost.

Troll shamanism is a third thing again — sea, storm, and the loa, which is a different conversation with the elements than either of the others is having.

The Alliance has no tradition of it. Not a prohibition, an absence. Nobody in Ironforge or Stormwind City knows how to listen. See Classes of Azeroth for the arc if a player wants to be the first.

At Level 1

You are an apprentice who has been heard once. Not obeyed — heard. The elements are not servants and every elder you meet will remind you of this, at length.

Specializations

WoW Spec2024 SubclassFitWhy
ElementalDruid — Circle of the Sea🟡 CloseWrath of the Sea is Lightning Shield. But the 2024 PHB dropped Tempest Domain and has no Storm Sorcery — there is no lightning-caster subclass in the core rules at all. Circle of the Sea is an aura, not a nuker.
EnhancementBarbarian — Path of the Elements (WoW book)✅ DirectElemental weapon enchantments on a melee rage chassis. Windfury as a subclass.
RestorationCleric — Life Domain, or Druid — Circle of the Land🟡 CloseThroughput is there; stacking heal-over-time is not. Riptide and Healing Rain have no 5.5E analogue, and Chain Heal has no bouncing-heal mechanic.

Alternate builds

  • Enhancement, unarmoured — Monk (Warrior of the Elements) with a weapon. 🟡 Close. Elemental strikes on a martial chassis. No armour and no totems, but it moves.
  • Elemental, fire-focused — Cleric (Light Domain). 🟡 Close. Lava Burst and Flame Shock, and the domain's radiant damage reads as fire without argument.
  • Elemental, as a raw conduit — Sorcerer (Spellfire Sorcery, Heroes of Faerûn). 🟡 Close. Power drawn straight from the source with nobody's permission — the best build for a troll or a self-taught orc, and it hits harder than Circle of the Sea.
  • Elemental, as a raw conduit — Sorcerer (Spellfire Sorcery, Heroes of Faerûn) reskinned. Better for a troll who was never formally taught.
  • Restoration, totem-forward — Druid (Circle of the Land) with Spike Growth, Plant Growth, and Wind Wall recast as totems planted in the ground.

Species Pairings

  • Orc — you are part of a revival four years old. Your grandparents would not recognise what you are doing.
  • Tauren — your tradition is unbroken and you are patient with the orcs relearning theirs, mostly
  • Troll — the sea and the loa, which is a different conversation than either of the others is having

Playing One Here

The shaman is the class whose power can decline to help. Lean into it. When the elements go quiet in a place, that is worldbuilding, and the party will notice before you have to explain it.

Why the elements start speaking

None of these depend on your species — pick one, or collide two.

  • They spoke first — you sought nothing. Something in the wind or the stone addressed you directly and would not stop.
  • The totems were your family's — and the one who held them died, or went silent, and the work came to you before you were ready for it.
  • The land near you is wrong — Durotar will not hold water and The Barrens is thinning. You started asking why, and the elements answer people who ask honestly.
  • You wanted a faith with no scripture — nothing to obey, nobody with the authority to excommunicate you. Four powers who will argue with you and occasionally refuse.
  • Restitution — the Horde spent a generation taking from the world by force. Somebody has to go and ask instead, and you volunteered.
  • It is the only power that can say no — what a shaman is lent is borrowed, never bought, and break that agreement and nothing of nature answers you again. After the last thirty years, a power that comes with terms reassures you far more than it worries you.
