Darkspear Trolls

Lore

Also known as Darkspear

In a sentenceA small, displaced tribe who owe the Horde everything, and who are the only trolls on Azeroth that anybody trusts.

Playable: Yes · Faction: Horde · Homeland: Durotar / the Echo Isles · Capital: (guests in Orgrimmar) · Leader: Vol'jin

Where They Stand

The Darkspear were a dwindling jungle tribe on the Broken Isles, being eaten alive by Murlocs and a sea witch (Zar'jira), when Thrall's fleet ran aground nearby. The orcs saved them; the trolls' witch doctor Sen'jin died in the fighting. His son Vol'jin brought the survivors into the Horde and has led them since.

They were given the Echo Isles off Durotar — and then lost them to Zalazane, a Darkspear witch doctor who went mad, seized the islands, and enslaved his own tribesmen with voodoo. The Darkspear now live in Sen'jin Village on the Durotar coast and as guests in Orgrimmar's Valley of Spirits.

How They Got Here

Trolls ruled everything, once. The Gurubashi and Amani empires covered both continents, and every city standing today is built on troll ruins. The Troll Wars broke the Amani; internal collapse broke the Gurubashi. Every troll alive knows this and is furious about it.

The Darkspear were exiles even then. Driven out of Stranglethorn Vale by the Gurubashi, they fled to the Broken Isles and dwindled there for generations — a tribe of a few hundred, losing ground to murlocs and to a naga sea witch.

Then the orcs ran aground. Thrall's fleet, crossing to Kalimdor, was wrecked near the isles. The Darkspear helped them and the orcs helped back. Sen'jin, the tribe's witch doctor and chieftain, was captured and killed — but not before telling Thrall where to find his people.

Vol'jin brought them into the Horde. A tribe of a few hundred joined a nation of thousands, and did it as full members rather than as clients. Thrall gave them the Echo Isles.

Then Zalazane took the isles. One of their own witch doctors, driven mad, turned voodoo on his own tribe and enslaved the ones who could not flee. The Darkspear have been homeless again for less than four years.

Who Leads Them

Vol'jin, chieftain and shadow hunter — young for the role, sharply intelligent, and the most politically astute person in Orgrimmar. He is Thrall's closest confidant and the one adviser who will tell him a plan is stupid.

Beneath him:

  • The witch doctors and shadow hunters, who hold spiritual authority and are consulted on everything
  • The elders, few in number, who remember Stranglethorn Vale

The tribe is small enough that everyone knows everyone. There is no bureaucracy. Decisions get made around a fire in an evening.

Where They Fit

The Darkspear are the Horde's smallest member and its sharpest. They contribute headhunters, scouts, witch doctors, and — crucially — Vol'jin, who functions as Thrall's political conscience the way Cairne functions as his moral one.

They are also guests, formally, in a city that is not theirs, and they feel it. The Valley of Spirits is a good district and it is still not home.

Other trolls consider them traitors. The Darkspear made a choice no other troll tribe has made — to join outsiders rather than fight them — and the Amani, Gurubashi, and Sandfury regard them as having sold the troll birthright for a berth in an orc city.

Voodoo

Darkspear spirituality is loa-worship and shadow magic — spirits bargained with rather than gods worshipped. It sits uneasily beside orcish shamanism and tauren ancestor-faith, and Thrall has decided not to ask too many questions.

The loa are not benevolent and are not expected to be. You bring an offering, you make a case, and you accept the terms. Zalazane is what happens when someone stops accepting the terms.

The Thing They Gave Up

Troll cultures across Azeroth practised ritual cannibalism — eating a defeated enemy to take their strength. The Gurubashi and Amani still do. The Darkspear did too, once.

They gave it up. Thrall forbade it as a condition of joining the Horde, and Vol'jin agreed on behalf of the tribe. That was not a small concession: it meant abandoning a practice tied up with victory, mourning, and what it meant to be a troll at all.

Other trolls regard the renunciation as one more proof that the Darkspear sold their birthright. The Darkspear regard it as the price of having a future.

What They Just Survived

  • Near-extinction on the Broken Isles, within the last five years
  • Sen'jin's death, which is recent enough that his son still leads by it
  • Losing the Echo Isles to one of their own

What They Are Fighting Now

WhereWhoWhy
The Echo IslesZalazaneTheir home, held by a madman, with their own people enslaved inside it
Durotar coastMurlocs, nagaConstant, and the reason Sen'jin Village keeps a watch
Stranglethorn ValeGurubashiThe old grudge. The Darkspear were exiled from there and have not forgotten.
Within the HordeNobody, openlyBeing the smallest member of a coalition is its own slow fight

What They Want

Go home. Retake the Echo Isles, free the enthralled, and stop being guests. This is unanimous and it is urgent.

Vol'jin wants the Horde to survive Thrall. He can see that the coalition is held together by one man's personal authority, and he thinks about what happens after more than anyone else does.

The elders want the tribe to grow. A few hundred people is not a nation, and the Darkspear are one bad season from being a footnote.

Character Traits

  • Regenerative — trolls heal from wounds that would kill anyone else. Severed limbs regrow, slowly.
  • Wry and fatalistic — the Darkspear have a sense of humour about their circumstances
  • Cannibalism is renounced, not practised — an old troll custom the tribe formally gave up to join the Horde. See below.
  • Loyal absolutely to Vol'jin and Thrall — this is a tribe that knows what it owes

How They Talk

Warm, teasing, and fatalistic. The Darkspear joke constantly, including about death, and outsiders often mistake this for not taking things seriously.

PhraseWhen
"Stay away from da voodoo."Half warning, half joke. Said to outsiders who ask too many questions.
"Da loa be watchin'."A blessing and a caution at once. Nobody says it entirely comfortably.
"Mon."Universal address — friend, stranger, superior. Not casual disrespect.
"Dis ain't gonna work."Said before doing it anyway
"We been worse."The tribe's whole outlook in three words
"Ya got somethin' worth tradin'?"Opening a negotiation. The Darkspear will trade for almost anything.
"Sen'jin would'a laughed."Highest praise for a plan. Also said at funerals.

What They Make of the Others

Humans — The old enemy, and the insult is that they have forgotten why. Two centuries of war with Arathor is a footnote in their histories and a scar in ours.

Dwarves — They fight Frostmane in the mountains and Witherbark in the hills and they do not ask which tribe you are. Being hated by association is an old feeling.

Night Elves — They came from us. Every troll knows it, no kaldorei will say it, and watching one change the subject is a small pleasure the Darkspear allow themselves.

Gnomes — They want to see a limb grow back. They are not subtle about wanting to see it. They are not going to see it.

Orcs — They pulled a dying tribe off a rock and gave us a coast. Sen'jin died in that fight. Everything since is detail.

Forsaken — Dead things that argue. The loa have opinions about that which the witch doctors decline to translate.

Tauren — The only people in the Horde who never once made us feel like guests. That is not a small thing when you are living in somebody else's city.

Playing One

A Darkspear PC has the tightest, most personal starting motivation in the Horde: go home. Zalazane holds the Echo Isles and some of their family are still there, enthralled.

Four shapes worth taking:

  • Headhunter or scout — you move through jungle the way other people move through a corridor, and the Horde has noticed
  • Witch doctor's student — you are learning to bargain with things that do not have your interests at heart. Zalazane learned the same way.
  • Enslaved and escaped — you were on the Echo Isles when Zalazane took them, and you got out. Others did not, and you know their names.
  • Born in Orgrimmar — the Valley of Spirits is the only home you have known, and the elders' grief for an island you cannot remember is slightly abstract to you

Questions worth answering at session zero: Who did you leave on the Isles? What have you promised a loa, and have you paid it? Do you owe Thrall personally, or just in principle?
