Faction: Alliance · Ruler: High Priestess Tyrande Whisperwind
The night elf capital, grown into the branches of Teldrassil — a city four years old belonging to a people ten thousand years old.
Tyrande Whisperwind rules essentially alone. Malfurion Stormrage is lost in The Emerald Dream. Fandral Staghelm leads the Cenarion Circle from the Cenarion Enclave and disagrees with her on nearly everything.
What It Feels Like
Quiet enough to be unnerving. There is no market noise, no hammering, no shouting. Kaldorei speak softly in public and find raised voices genuinely shocking. Visitors from Ironforge describe the silence as the hardest adjustment.
Grown, not built. Nothing here was quarried. The walkways are living wood, the walls are bark, and the whole city moves very slightly in the wind. Rain arrives as a fine drift through the canopy rather than a downpour.
Silver light, always. Moonlight is the working light, supplemented by moonwells. Full daylight never quite reaches the upper terraces.
Watchful. Sentinels are everywhere, they are all women, they are all armed, and they will track a stranger's progress across the city without troubling to hide it.
Districts and Sites
| Place | What's There |
|---|---|
| Temple of the Moon | Tyrande's seat. Sisters of Elune. The great moonwell. |
| Cenarion Enclave | Fandral Staghelm and the druids |
| Warrior's Terrace | Sentinels |
| Craftsmen's Terrace | Trade and professions |
| Tradesmen's Terrace | Auction house, bank |
| The Temple Gardens | Where the moonwells are |
| Rut'theran Village | At the roots — ferry to Auberdine and Stormwind |
Walking It
You arrive at Rut'theran Village, at the roots, and take the portal up. That transition is deliberate: the village is a working harbour, ordinary and a little shabby, and then you step through and the city is silver.
The Temple of the Moon dominates everything — the largest structure and the actual seat of power, since Tyrande rules as High Priestess rather than as a queen. The great moonwell inside is public and pilgrims drink from it.
The Cenarion Enclave sits apart across a bridge, which says something about the relationship. The druids keep their own hours and their own counsel.
The terraces are where ordinary life happens, and they are the least busy commercial district of any capital.
Who You Meet
- Sentinels, armoured, unhurried, and watching. The city's police, army, and border force.
- Priestesses of Elune in silver, running the temple and most of the civil administration
- Druids, rarer than you would expect — many are still asleep in the barrow dens
- The newly awakened — druids out of the Dens who missed The Third War entirely and are visibly disoriented
- Very few children. This is the detail visitors notice last and think about longest.
- Tauren druids, occasionally, on Cenarion business, treated with genuine warmth
Customs and Manners
- Greet properly. "Ishnu-alah" — well fortune to you. The reply is "Ishnu-dal-dieb." Kaldorei will not translate and will notice if you learn it.
- Speak quietly. Volume reads as aggression.
- Do not hurry anyone. A kaldorei asked for an immediate answer will simply not give one.
- Never draw on arcane magic here. Not illegal exactly — the Sentinels will simply stop you, and the room will go cold. This is policy, not superstition. See Night Elves.
- Do not cut living wood. Not even a twig. Not even for a fire.
- Do not ask about age. It was a neutral question for ten thousand years and is now the most painful subject in the city.
- Moonwells are not decorative. Drinking is permitted; washing in one is a desecration.
Food and Drink
Kaldorei eating is light, seasonal, and largely vegetarian — not from doctrine but because a people who lived forever never developed an appetite for excess.
- Moonberry juice, sweet and faintly luminous, served everywhere and to everyone
- Silverleaf tea, bitter, taken at moonrise
- Fruit, nuts, mushrooms and river fish, prepared simply and beautifully
- Sweetblossom bread, dense and honeyed, the one thing visitors reliably ask for again
- Elven wine — old, expensive, and poured in small quantities. Getting visibly drunk is a serious embarrassment.
There is no tavern culture. The nearest thing is a communal table on the Craftsmen's Terrace where food is shared without much being said. Dwarves find this baffling and slightly sad.
What You Can Buy
Small selection, extremely high quality, and no arcane goods whatsoever.
| Trade | Where |
|---|---|
| Leatherworking | Craftsmen's Terrace. Best in the world — kaldorei leatherwork is unmatched. |
| Herbalism, alchemy | Craftsmen's Terrace, with instruction that treats plants as people |
| Tailoring | Fine, light, and expensive |
| Skinning, first aid | Widely taught |
| Enchanting | Yes — nature-flavoured, and the practitioners resent the category |
| Engineering, arcane goods | No. Do not ask. |
Groups Worth Knowing
- The Sisters of Elune — priesthood and civil service in one. Tyrande's institution.
- The Sentinels — the army, and the most experienced light infantry in the world
- Cenarion Circle — druids, headquartered at the Enclave, and the one body with warm Tauren ties across the faction line
- The Wardens — jailers. Mostly absent, chasing an escapee, and their absence is felt.
- The Barrow Den keepers — a small order tending sleeping druids who have not woken. Grim, patient work.
Downtime Here
Darnassus is the Alliance's best city for nature trades and quiet study, and its worst for shopping. See Travel and Downtime.
| Activity | What Darnassus Offers |
|---|---|
| Craft | Leatherworking and alchemy at the highest level available anywhere |
| Research | Temple archives, ten thousand years deep — if a priestess vouches for you |
| Train | Druid, hunter, priest, rogue, warrior. No mages, no paladins. |
| Curry favour | The Cenarion Circle takes outsiders seriously if you have done something for a forest |
| Carouse | Barely applicable. A shared table and a long silence. Roll once on Rumor Tables, not twice. |
| Tend a relationship | The best city in the game for it — kaldorei measure trust in years and notice effort |
Things To Do In A Session
- Attend moonrise at the Temple — the whole city stops, and it is genuinely moving
- Talk to someone newly awakened from a barrow den, and hear them ask what year it is
- Sit in on a Cenarion argument about Teldrassil and hear how carefully nobody says what they think
- Take the ferry from Rut'theran and watch the city recede — the best way to appreciate its scale
- Try to buy something arcane and learn exactly how a polite refusal can feel like a slammed door
