In the World
The Cenarion Circle, taught by Cenarius, who is dead — killed by Grom Hellscream in Ashenvale four years ago.
For ten thousand years kaldorei druids slept in the Barrow Dens while the Sentinels kept watch above them. They are only now waking up, into a world where Nordrassil has burned, their immortality is gone, and the kaldorei have joined an alliance with humans. Nobody warned them. There was no way to.
And four years ago the night elves did something genuinely unprecedented: they taught outsiders. The first Tauren druids are alive right now, and the eldest of them is younger than the war that made them possible.
At Level 1
You are either newly awake or newly taught. In practice these mean the same thing: everyone assumes you know more than you do, and you are not going to correct them.
Specializations
| WoW Spec | 2024 Subclass | Fit | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balance | Druid — Circle of the Stars | ✅ Direct | Starry Form is Moonkin Form — a non-beast combat shape with a caster's damage. Moonfire and Starfire in one feature. |
| Feral | Druid — Circle of the Moon | ✅ Direct | Cat Form. Wild Shape as your primary combat mode rather than a utility button. |
| Guardian | Druid — Circle of the Moon, bear forms | 🔄 Shared | Same subclass as Feral, tankiest beast at each tier. Hits the no-threat-mechanic wall — you can be a bear, you cannot make anything attack the bear. |
| Restoration | Druid — Circle of the Land | 🟡 Close | The healing spell list is there. Stacking heal-over-time is not — Rejuvenation, Lifebloom and Wild Growth are a HoT-management game that 5.5E has no vocabulary for. |
Alternate builds
- Guardian, as pure durability — Barbarian (Path of the Wild Heart). Bear Form as a rage rather than a Wild Shape. The best tauren guardian build, and it needs no spell slots.
- Balance, as a moon-priest — Cleric (Light Domain) reflavoured to Elune. Blurs into Priest, which is arguably correct for a kaldorei.
- Restoration, sea-flavoured — Druid (Circle of the Sea) for a druid trained near Darkshore rather than inland.
- Feral, without spellcasting — Monk (Warrior of the Open Hand) reskinned as an unarmoured shapeshifter. Unusual, fast, and mechanically clean.
Species Pairings
- Night elf — you went to sleep before The Third War and woke after it. Your people are mortal. Nobody warned you.
- Tauren — you are among the first druids your people have ever produced. There is no elder to ask. You are the elder now, at nineteen.
Playing One Here
Both druid species carry the same wound from opposite directions: there is nobody above you who has done this before. The Cenarion Circle is a leaderless institution running on the authority of a dead demigod, and half its membership is still asleep.
Why someone joins the Circle
None of these depend on your species — pick one, or collide two.
- You dreamed something that turned out to be true — a place you had never been, a fire that had not started yet. Somebody older recognised what that meant.
- You watched a place die — Felwood, a stretch of Ashenvale, grassland in The Barrens that is now not. Grief is a perfectly good reason to learn how growth works.
- An animal did not behave like an animal — it waited for you, or led you somewhere, and you followed. You are still following.
- You wanted out of the war — the Cenarion Circle takes no side, and after four years that sounded like the only sane address on the continent. Nobody mentioned that Malfurion has not woken and Fandral Staghelm is the one who answers now.
- The shape came before the study — you turned into something once, involuntarily, under stress. The Circle found you afterwards and explained what had happened.
- Somebody had to be first — there was no elder to ask, so you worked it out from the ground up, and you are now the closest thing to an authority anyone has.
