In the World

Not a job — a relationship. The bond with a companion beast is the entire discipline, and every people comes to it from a completely different direction.

Dwarven hunters are Explorers' League escorts with bears and rifles. Kaldorei hunters ride nightsabers bred in Teldrassil and have done for ten thousand years. Orcish hunters take wolf-brothers, a practice that survived the Legion because it never depended on magic. Tauren hunt as a rite of adulthood in Mulgore. Darkspear hunters take raptors, which is less taming than negotiation.

Humans, gnomes, and Forsaken have marksmen and trappers — but no beast tradition. A human who wants a companion animal is a ranger, not a hunter, and should be built as one.

At Level 1

You are a tracker with one animal that has decided you are acceptable. It is not obedient. It is present, which is different.

Specializations

WoW Spec2024 SubclassFitWhy
Beast MasteryRanger — Beast Master✅ DirectYour companion is a character, not a spell effect. Nothing lost in translation.
MarksmanshipFighter — Arcane Archer (Arcana Unleashed)✅ DirectThe Marksmanship build. Arcane Shot is Aimed Shot: a limited pool of big, named arrows.
MarksmanshipRanger — Hunter🟡 CloseThe available-today version. Colossus Slayer is Aimed Shot, but the subclass is generic and 5e rangers do not do ranged burst.
SurvivalRanger — Gloom Stalker🟡 CloseGets the ambush and the melee-from-a-ranged-class oddity. Traps have no 5.5E mechanic — Freezing Trap and Explosive Trap are reflavoured spells at best.
SurvivalRanger — Winter Walker (Heroes of Faerûn)🟡 CloseFreezing Trap and Chimaera Shot as an entire subclass. Better than Gloom Stalker if the character is cold-flavoured; worse if they are a jungle troll.

Alternate builds

  • Survival, as a trapper — Ranger (Fey Wanderer) reskinned. Charm and misdirection instead of shadow.
  • Marksmanship, frost-flavoured — Ranger (Winter Walker, Heroes of Faerûn). Freezing Trap and Chimaera Shot as a whole subclass.
  • Beast Mastery, without spellcasting — Fighter (Champion) with an animal companion granted as a background feature. Cleanest for a player who wants a bow and a bear and nothing else.

Species Pairings

  • Night elf — a nightsaber born the same night you were, in a people who no longer live long enough for that to be a small thing
  • Dwarf — Explorers' League escort. You have shot things that came out of holes your employers dug.
  • Troll — a raptor. It is not tame. This is understood by both of you.
  • Tauren — you hunt for the herd, and you have never once killed for sport
  • Orc — a wolf out of Durotar, from a line that predates the Legion and outlasted it

Playing One Here

The hunter's story is almost always the beast's story. Where did it come from, what did it cost, and what happens the first time the party asks you to send it somewhere it will not come back from?

Why someone takes to the wild

None of these depend on your species — pick one, or collide two.

  • The beast chose you — you did not tame anything. You were there when it needed something, and it has not left since.
  • It started as meat — you were feeding a village. Then somebody left a copy of The Green Hills of Stranglethorn where you could find it, and you learned there is a version of this that people write books about.
  • Escort work — the Explorers' League pays for a rifle and the Steamwheedle Cartel pays for a guide. Both of them dig up things that need shooting.
  • Something out there needs killing — a specific animal, named locally, that took someone. You have been preparing for that one creature for years.
  • You are better alone — cities do not agree with you. The wild asks nothing of you, and neither does what walks beside you.
  • You were the one who came back — a party went into Ashenvale or The Barrens and you walked out of it. Now you go in on purpose.
