In the World

No institution, no initiation, no secret. Every settlement in Azeroth has someone who holds the line, and none of them call it a calling. Militias in Elwynn Forest, city guards in Ironforge, caravan escorts on the Barrens road, clan warriors in Durotar, mercenaries drinking through their pay in Booty Bay.

That universality is the point. Every other class on this list needs a teacher, an order, a bargain, or a bloodline. The warrior needs a weapon and a reason. In Year 29, both are easy to come by.

At Level 1

You are a volunteer who has survived two or three real fights. You own a weapon and you know what it is for. Nobody trained you formally — someone older showed you how to stand, and the rest you learned from people trying to kill you.

Specializations

WoW Spec2024 SubclassFitWhy
ArmsFighter — Battle Master✅ DirectManeuvers are Mortal Strike, Overpower, and Colossus Smash: a limited pool of decisive strikes rather than a rotation.
FuryBarbarian — Path of the Berserker🟡 CloseDual-wielding rage that trades defence for output. Reckless Attack is Recklessness. Loses the building of rage — 5e Rage is a duration you enter, not a meter you fill.
ProtectionFighter — Banneret (Heroes of Faerûn)🟡 CloseCommanding Shout and Rallying Cry as real mechanics — a warrior who holds the line by commanding rather than by soaking.
ProtectionFighter — Champion, shield and Protection style🟡 CloseThe no-book version. Durable and simple; mechanically just "more crits wearing a shield".

Alternate builds

  • Arms, without the bookkeeping — Fighter (Champion) with a greatsword. Crits on 19. No maneuver economy to track.
  • Fury, for a player who wants spell-free complexity — Fighter (Battle Master) with two-weapon fighting, taking the aggressive maneuvers only.

Species Pairings

  • Orc — born free in Durotar, and tired of being told you don't understand what that cost
  • Tauren — you have taken the Rite of Strength and killed a Bristleback chief; nothing since has been as frightening
  • Human — Stormwind Army, either still serving on nine copper a day or resigned over something you won't discuss
  • Forsaken — you fought in life. The reflexes came back before the memories did.
  • Night elf — Sentinel. Four years mortal and still adjusting to what a wound means now.
  • Dwarf — Ironforge mountaineer, or Explorers' League muscle who has been down more holes than any scholar
  • Gnome — small, fast, and furious about Gnomeregan
  • Troll — Darkspear, and the tribe has been fighting for its life for four straight years

Playing One Here

The warrior is the class with no cosmic problem. Nobody's god went quiet, nobody's academy burned, nobody's bargain came due. That makes you the party's anchor — and it means your story has to come from what you want, not from what was taken.

Good warrior questions for session zero: Who taught you? Are they alive? What are you being paid, and by whom? What did you do in The Third War, if you were old enough?

Why someone picks up a weapon

None of these depend on your species — pick one, or collide two.

  • You were conscripted and never stopped — The Third War took everyone who could hold a line. Four years on, peace has not found you a second trade.
  • Somebody has to stand in front — you are not the strongest in the room or the angriest. You are the one who noticed nobody else was going to do it.
  • You are being paid — soldiering is the largest employer in Azeroth right now. Stromgarde is a garrison fighting on three fronts and is in no position to be choosy about who it hires; the Steamwheedle Cartel pays better and asks even less.
  • A debt — someone died covering your retreat, a family owes a blood-price, or a lord bought your loyalty when you were too young to price it.
  • You want a name — Uther got one and so did Grom Hellscream, by opposite means. Songs outlive people and you have done the arithmetic.
  • You lost something to a monster and went looking for it — the Scourge, the Defias, a gnoll warband, whatever came out of the hills. The grudge is specific even when the enemy isn't.
