In the World

The Order of the Silver Hand was the finest institution the Alliance ever built and it is broken. Uther is dead, killed by his own student. Tirion was excommunicated for sparing an orc who saved his life. Arthas — the Order's brightest — became the precise thing it existed to destroy.

What remains trains initiates at Northshire Abbey and in Ironforge, and nobody has replaced the Highlord. There is no central authority, no unified doctrine, and no agreement about what went wrong. Ask three paladins why Arthas fell and you will get three answers, all of them defensive.

The lock is lore, not balance. The Silver Hand is a human institution founded by Stormwind and Lordaeron clergy, and the Light came to the dwarves through Ironforge's contact with humanity. No Horde tradition of Light-wielding exists in Year 29. See Classes of Azeroth for what to do when a player wants one anyway.

At Level 1

You are an initiate who took vows from an Order that cannot currently define what it stands for. The Light answers you anyway, which is either reassuring or unsettling depending on the day and how much you have thought about it.

Specializations

WoW Spec2024 SubclassFitWhy
HolyOath of the Holy (WoW book)✅ DirectThe purpose-built healing paladin. It exists because 5.5E paladins are otherwise not healers at all — Lay on Hands is a pool, not a rotation.
ProtectionOath of Glory🟡 CloseInspiring Smite is Word of Glory and the aura reads as Devotion Aura. Runs into the same no-threat-mechanic wall as Protection Warrior.
RetributionOath of Vengeance✅ DirectVow of Enmity is Avenging Wrath in everything but name. The single cleanest spec-to-subclass match in this whole vault.

Alternate builds

  • Protection, as a bulwark — Oath of the Ancients. 🟡 Close. Aura of Warding is the most defensive thing in the class. Reflavour the fey imagery as Light and it works.
  • The Silver Hand as written — Oath of Devotion. 🟡 Close. Sacred Weapon and Protection from Evil are the Order's actual liturgy. The most institutional paladin, if the character cares more about the Order than about a spec.
  • Retribution, for a lapsed one — Oath of Vengeance taken after a broken oath rather than instead of one. Tirion's arc, played forward.

Species Pairings

  • Human — Northshire-trained, and old enough to remember when the tabard meant something uncomplicated
  • Dwarf — the Light came to Ironforge late and practically; you approach it like engineering rather than mystery

Playing One Here

Every paladin at this table carries the same unanswered question: if the Light chose Arthas, what is choosing me?

There is no institution above you to settle it. Uther is dead. The Abbey writes to the crown and gets no reply. Whatever you decide the Light means, you are deciding it yourself, at level one, with no one to check your work.

Why someone takes the vows

None of these depend on your species — pick one, or collide two.

  • You were saved by one — a Silver Hand knight pulled you out of something in The Third War and did not survive doing it. You are paying it forward, badly.
  • You survived what should have killed you — and the Light was the only explanation anyone offered. You have been trying to earn the diagnosis ever since.
  • The tabard, not the theology — the Order is the last institution that still means something to the people it protects, and it is not the only one offering you one. The Scarlet Crusade keeps recruiting officers inside Stormwind Cathedral and nobody has stopped them.
  • Penance — you did something in the war. The Light answering you at all is the part that keeps you awake.
  • Repair work — Arthas broke the Order and nobody has rebuilt it. You think you can. Nobody senior has told you otherwise, because there is nobody senior.
  • It simply started answering — no vow, no vigil, no Abbey. It answers, and you are trying to work out what it wants in return.
