In the World

Pandaren exist in 2004 as a Warcraft III easter egg. Chen Stormstout was a hero unit, and that is the complete published canon. Pandaria will not surface for eight years, there is no Shado-Pan, and no Order of the Broken Temple.

But nobody in Azeroth needed pandaren to invent punching. The traditions that already exist:

  • Kaldorei Wardens — night elf jailers trained in unarmed restraint, ten thousand years old and unbroken. The closest thing Azeroth has to a martial order.
  • Tauren wrestling — a rite in Thunder Bluff and Mulgore, practised for status and settled without weapons
  • Troll fighting-forms — surviving fragments of the Gurubashi and Amani empires, taught in the Darkspear Tribe alongside the drums
  • Shen'dralar discipline — the exiled highborne in Dire Maul have had ten thousand years and nothing to do
  • Pandaren brewing — one traveller, if a player wants it. See Species of the Sourcebook.

Pick one at session zero. Mechanically Monk, narratively local.

At Level 1

You were taught by one person and you are still copying them. You have never met another practitioner outside your teacher's household, and you assume the discipline is more widespread than it is.

Specializations

WoW SpecSubclassFitWhy
WindwalkerMonk — Warrior of the Open Hand✅ DirectThe default monk is Windwalker. Flying Serpent Kick, Fists of Fury, Touch of Death — all of it is Open Hand technique, feature for feature.
MistweaverMonk — Warrior of Mercy✅ DirectHands of healing and harm. Hand of Mercy is Soothing Mist. Best healer-monk mapping in either system.
BrewmasterMonk — Warrior of Mystic Brews (WoW book)✅ DirectStagger, Purifying Brew, and the stumbling-tank identity. The 2014 Drunken Master brought forward.

Alternate builds

  • Windwalker, elemental — Monk (Warrior of the Elements). 🔄 Shared chassis, storm-and-fire flavour instead of pure martial. Excellent for a Shaman-adjacent concept.
  • A Warden — Monk (Warrior of Shadow). Shadow Step and Darkness. No WoW spec matches it, but it is the single best mechanical fit for a kaldorei Warden and it is sitting in the core Player's Handbook.
  • Arcane-flavoured — Monk (Warrior of the Mystic Arts, Arcana Unleashed). Not a WoW spec, but it exists and it is good.

Species Pairings

  • Night elf — a Warden's discipline, which is a real ten-thousand-year-old tradition and the least homebrew option on this page
  • Tauren — Thunder Bluff wrestling. Powerful Build and Unarmoured Defence agree with each other.
  • Troll — Darkspear fighting-forms, half-remembered from an empire that fell
  • Human — a monastery in the Redridge Mountains that predates Stormwind and has nine members
  • Pandaren — if allowed as an exotic pick. The only character on this page who would recognise the word "monk".

Playing One Here

The monk's story is the teacher, same as the Mage's. The difference is that a mage's academy was destroyed and a monk's never existed in the first place.

Why someone submits to the training

None of these depend on your species — pick one, or collide two.

  • Somebody taught you to stop being afraid — you were a frightened child and they were patient about it. The discipline is downstream of that debt.
  • You were unarmed at the worst moment of your life — never again is a short vow and a very long practice.
  • You were violent and wanted to stop — the forms were prescribed as a cure. They work. You practise daily because you know exactly what happens when you don't.
  • The tradition is nearly gone — your teacher has one lineage, no successors, and you are it. That is a duty whether or not you asked for it.
  • You could not afford steel — no armour, no weapon, no patron. Years later you noticed you no longer needed any of the three.
  • It is a study, not a mystery — you approach the body the way a mage approaches a book, and you find the spiritual framing faintly embarrassing.
