The D&D World of Warcraft Sourcebook offers 16 species — 11 new, plus WoW-mapping rules for 5 that already exist in the 2024 Player's Handbook. This page is the verdict on each, measured against the canon boundary.
Your Eight Are All In There
| Launch Species | Where It Comes From |
|---|---|
| Humans | 2024 PHB Human, with WoW-mapping rules |
| Dwarves | 2024 PHB Dwarf, with WoW-mapping rules |
| Night Elves | 2024 PHB Elf, with WoW-mapping rules |
| Gnomes | 2024 PHB Gnome, with WoW-mapping rules |
| Orcs | 2024 PHB Orc, with WoW-mapping rules |
| Forsaken | New species |
| Tauren | New species |
| Troll | New species |
That is a clean fit. The five PHB species get Azeroth-specific rules rather than a reprint, and the three the PHB could not cover are built from scratch.
The Other Eight — Verdicts
Ranked by how little damage they do to a 2004 campaign.
✅ Worgen — the best exception
In the world at launch: yes. This is the one people forget. Worgen are already loose in Year 29 — Archmage Arugal summoned them from the Emerald Dream to fight the Scourge in Silverpine Forest, lost control, and they have spread through Shadowfang Keep and into Duskwood. The Nightbane pack in Duskwood is a live quest chain at launch.
What does not exist yet is Gilneas as a playable homeland. The Greymane Wall is sealed, the nation is silent, and the Gilnean worgen curse story is a Cataclysm plot six years out.
Faction: neither. A worgen PC at launch is an outcast from both, which is a feature.
✅ Pandaren — charming, low damage
In the world at launch: barely. Chen Stormstout was a Warcraft III hero unit and that is the complete canon. Pandaria is behind the mist and will be for eight years.
But "a wandering brewmaster from a land nobody has heard of" costs the setting almost nothing, because nobody in Azeroth can contradict them. The mystery is the character.
Faction: neutral, which suits a party leaning one way and wanting a bridge.
⚠️ Mechagnome — needs a reskin, then it works
In the world at launch: no, but the parts are. Mechagon is a Battle for Azeroth zone from 2019. However — Gnomeregan fell to radiation four years ago, gnomish prosthetics and clockwork limbs are everywhere in Ironforge's Tinkertown, and things were done to some of the survivors down there that nobody has catalogued.
Faction: Alliance, Gnomeregan Exiles.
⚠️ Draenei — possible, as a castaway
In the world at launch: no. The Exodar crashes on Azuremyst in 2007. The only draenei on Azeroth in Year 29 are the Lost Ones — degenerate, hostile, and living in the Swamp of Sorrows and Blasted Lands near the Dark Portal.
The playable draenei required a full retcon of what "draenei" meant in 2004. Importing one means importing the retcon.
Faction: would be Alliance, but arrives with no ties to anyone.
⚠️ Earthen — mechanically fine, narratively a landmine
In the world at launch: yes, asleep. Earthen are titan-forged and they are in Uldaman right now, in stasis, at level 35ish. The species itself arrives playable with The War Within in 2024.
The problem is not canon. The problem is that an earthen PC would put a mid-campaign revelation on the character sheet at session zero.
Faction: Alliance by default, but an earthen predates the concept of factions and would find them baffling.
❌ Vulpera — no
Battle for Azeroth, 2018. Vol'dun does not exist, Zandalar is closed, and there is no vulpera presence anywhere in the Eastern Kingdoms or Kalimdor in 2004.
❌ Dracthyr — no, and the Evoker goes with them
Dragonflight, 2022. Asleep in the Forbidden Reach since before The Second War, created by Neltharion, unknown to everyone including the other Aspects.
A dracthyr PC hands the party a walking piece of Neltharion's laboratory at level one, and The Dragon in the Court depends on the Black Dragonflight's works staying hidden.
❌ Haranir — no
Midnight, 2026. From the Underhold beneath Khaz Algar, a continent that has not been discovered. There is not enough published lore for me to reskin it into 2004 honestly, and no in-world hook to hang it on.
Summary Table
| Species | In 2004? | Verdict | Reskin Needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Worgen | Yes, as Arugal's victims | Best exception | Drop Gilneas |
| Pandaren | Warcraft III cameo only | Allowed | Drop Pandaria as a place |
| Mechagnome | Parts, not the species | Allowed with reskin | Gnomeregan, not Mechagon |
| Draenei | Lost Ones only | DM approval | Castaway, not Exodar |
| Earthen | Asleep in Uldaman | DM approval — spoiler cost | None; that's the problem |
| Vulpera | No | No | Would be full homebrew |
| Dracthyr | No | No — and the Evoker is cut with them | — |
| Haranir | No | No | — |
Renown
The sourcebook ties species to a starting Renown Score with one of its 20+ factions, built on the Dungeon Master's Guide renown rules. That is close to what Reputation as a Mechanic already does here.
